Another View

One benefit of the soothing qualities of that first phase of the project was that it gave me the mental and emotional space to reflect on other views, other perspectives – on how it is for other people.

When I’m in the wheelchair and everyone else is ambulant, for example, the extent and impact of my immobility is obvious. But on Zoom, the condition is hidden – I’m like everyone else, homogenised into a screen-sized, leg-less, seated position.

And, in that environment, it’s easier to understand that the duality I experience – this dichotomy – is true for so many people. I can visualise that there are multiple versions of us all – some positive and outgoing, some damaged and private.

So, stepping outside my introspective-self, away from my current passion completely – away from the 19th century and cyanotypes – and back into the digital world, I began to consider 'Another View', (hopefully) more compassionate and more universal.

And I represented this universal-duality by exploring my catalogue of botanical images and creating diptychs in contrasting styles – starting with naturalistic versions, but soon becoming less figurative.

‘Another View’
universal and compassionate
