Fine Art Photography and Individuality

Overlooked Places, Outside and In

One idea which has crept up on me during this project is the understanding that my art-photography is unique. Countless numbers of people have walked through Great Heads Wood and noticed the beck alongside them; some may have photographed the very scene above. But no one else has interpreted it as ‘Overlooked Places’ and created a series from it (see the series HERE …)

Similarly, Fountains Abbey is very well-photographed, as are Lake Windermere, Bamburgh Castle, Salt's Mill and the Amsterdam canals (the places I've shown you in this section on my fine art photography) but the individual images I've produced – the pieces of art – are my interpretations, mine alone. Uniquely, wholly mine.

Now I'd like to expand on this idea – tell you why the individuality of my images feels important, feels significant. I'd like to be able to explain what it means to me, but I can't just yet. I've walked round the house, looked out of the windows, watched the rain beating on the garage roof, talked to Ian, but the grand conclusion remains elusive. I do know that I started this project with the aim of finding whether my photography delivers any un-acknowledged benefits and this, I feel, is will be one of them.

I just can’t pinpoint what that benefit is!

Bear with me – I’ll get back to you.
